Tiles are a very specialised art form. The restrictions of having to work upon a small, regular shape demand a specialised artist. The design has to stand as a single object and yet be able to work as a repeat, or in combination with other designs. It has to take into account the constraints of the decorating techniques that can be used, the need for mass production, and the scale of the finished project. Perhaps for these reasons, many tile designers have been architects as well. Current research is enabling us to identify more and more designers, but many company records have been lost over the years making the task incresingly difficult.
