Carter & Co., Poole, Dorset
Carter and Co was established in 1873 when Jesse Carter bought out a couple of failing tile makers in Poole and Hamworthy. The company soon established itself as the largest manufacturers outside Stoke on Trent and produced a wide range of tiles for walls and floors. In the 1920s, the company established Poole Pottery to create a wide range of art pottery and the exchange of ideas between the two businesses gave Carters the design impetus it needed to survive the inter-war years. Carters continued to produce decorated tiles after WW2 and were one of the first companies to explore silk screen printing, introducing the first automated silk screen printing line in Britain in the early 1950s. They eventually amalgamated with Pilkington's Tiles in 1964, the Carter name finally disappearing in 1968.
