Joseph Roelants was a Belgian émigré who came to the UK in c.1918 to work for Carter & Co at Poole. He designed the coloured Dutch and blue Dutch series for the company during the early 1920s and also probably painted many of the early examples. Roelants returned to Belgium after World War I and continued to design tiles for the Belgian company Hemixem.
