Founded by Herbert Minton, the original Minton and Co was that part of his empire devoted to encaustic tile manufacture. Originally, dust-pressed tiles were sold under the name Minton, Hollins and Co, but an acrimonious law suit in 1868 meant that the firms split and went their own ways. The new firm of Minton Hollins & Co retained the rights to the Minton & Co name which they continued to use for encaustic tile production. After Minton China Works ceased tile production in c1920, Minton Hollins and Co used the Minton and Co name for all tile prodcution until their demise in 1968.
