Samuel Wright (a Zaffer Merchant - he sold cobalt ore for producing the ceramic colour blue) was the original patentee of the 'encaustic' technique of making inlaid tiles. He established a small business to make the tiles, but was unsuccessful and in 1835, he sold equal shares in the patent to Chamberlains of Worcester and Herbert Minton. Very few examples of his tiles appear to have survived.
