William Morris is best known as the father of the Arts & Crafts Movement. He advocated a return to craftsmanship rather than mass production and inspired many architects and designers of his day. When searching for tiles for his new home, The Red House, he was disappointed not to find handmade tiles and set about decorating Dutch delftware blanks with the stained glass enamels he already used. He and his colleagues continued to decorate tiles particularly for church commissions and private clients over the next 20 years or so. A number of his designs were also produced by commercial tile makers in the Netherlands.
